Pop quiz: What do you think are the deadliest jobs in the U.S.? If you answered fishers and fishing workers, loggers, pilots, farmers and miners, you’re correct. These were just some of the top occupations with high fatal injury rates, according to 2011 workplace fatality data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. When it comes to the total number of injuries, however, one vocation is the most dangerous of all: drivers and truck drivers.
Last year, 683 truck drivers and drivers suffered injuries while at work. Nearly one-fourth of all multiple fatality incidents are due to highway incidents; what’s more, transportation-related incidents make up 49 percent. Texas has the dubious distinction of being the state with the most fatal work injuries (456), followed by California (302) and Pennsylvania (219).
Another troubling statistic uncovered in the infographic: males make up 92 percent of people who suffered fatal work injuries. This is no surprise here, as all of the deadliest jobs above are traditionally dominated by men.
