Brighten Up Your Office to Improve Your Mood

Topics:

This is a tough time of year to be inside an office. The sun is shining, the flowers are in bloom, and you really want to be outside enjoying it. The days are longer, so hopefully that allows you some time to get outside after work, but that only goes so far to help you through the workday.

In the spring, we need something a little extra special to help us maintain the pleasing dispositions we’re expected to present at work. There are a few quick little changes you can make to your workspace that can go further than you’d think toward improving your mood. Here’s what we’ve found.

Do You Know What You're Worth?

1. Do some spring cleaning.

Tidying up your environment can lighten your mood and relieve stress. Plus, all spaces need a good deep cleaning once in a while, and that’s what spring cleaning is all about. But, you don’t have to do it all at once. Try cleaning up for just 10 minutes a day, and see how much progress you make in a week. Even just attending to that one pile or drawer that’s been driving you crazy will give your mood a little boost.

2. Improve the lighting.

Exposure to bright light has been scientifically proven to improve energy levels. Therefore, productivity is increased, and your mood is improved. The kind of light you bathe yourself in matters too. Consider replacing some of the lighting in your office with something you bring in from home. A great lamp that resides in your guest room, for example, might serve you better at the office. You’ll be surprised at the difference it makes in how you feel.

3. Get something that’s green and grows.

It sounds a little wacky, but color psychology is a real thing. And, looking at something green has been proven to reduce stress. Plants are a nice addition to any space. But, also throw open those blinds in your office and gaze out at the trees and bushes when your mind wanders, instead of looking at the wall or your computer screen. You’ll be surprised at how it helps you stay calm but also energized.

4. Bring in a favorite sparkly, shiny thing.

It’s great to have pictures of loved ones at your desk, but having a couple other favorite trinkets is nice too. If you have a favorite little crystal, for example, that makes you happy, keep it on your desk. Just picking it up and twirling it around in your hands during a chat with a co-worker could give your mood a tiny boost. Also, pick objects that remind you of peaceful times and places. Holding on to them for a minute will remind you of those feelings and help you call them up.
