Ben & Jerry’s Becomes Certified B Corporation

Topics:

Ben & Jerry’s is officially a certified B Corporation. The Unilever-acquired ice cream maker is the first subsidiary to earn this distinction, which is essentially the sustainable business equivalent to LEED certifications for green buildings.

Nearly every aspect of the company culture at Ben & Jerry’s focuses on sustainability, from the Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper used for all ice cream containers to employee benefits like health and wellness programs and a community garden. Here’s an excerpt of the statement Ben & Jerry’s posted on its website:

A quarter-century after pioneering the socially responsible business movement, Ben & Jerry’s is happy to announce it is the first wholly-owned subsidiary to gain B Corp Certification. B Corps are a new type of corporation which uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.

Ben & Jerry’s has always believed in linked prosperity — that all stakeholders connected to the business should prosper as it prospers, from those who produce the ingredients, to employees who make the product, to the communities in which the company operates.
