If you’re looking for a new job or a pay increase, try learning Linux. Your first response might be, "What is Linux?" Good question.
Linux is an operating system for computers, like Windows. It was originally designed to provide users with a free or low-cost operating system, but is now used by many businesses due to its efficiency and speed. Many mobile phones, GPS devices, and even the New York Stock Exchange run on Linux.
And, like all things tech, knowledge of Linux is in demand. While many jobs are seeing slow wage growth, tech wages are booming. Employers in the field of technology and computer science are hiring but finding it challenging to fill the roles with workers that have the correct skills and experience.
“When there is a high demand for a skill like Linux, and a low supply of professionals with that skill, employers must be willing to pay more for new talent and also to retain good talent,” said Katie Bardaro, lead analyst at PayScale.com.
The Linux Foundation just released their 2012 Linux Jobs Report, featuring insights from over 2,000 hiring managers in both the private and government sectors. The report found that Linux professionals are in high demand, and employers are having a very difficult time filling the roles.
According to the report,
Eight in 10 (81%) survey respondents say that hiring Linux talent is a priority in 2012. This urgency is driving a substantial uptick in recruiting activity, with nearly half (47%) of hiring managers expecting to add more Linux professionals to their firms in the first six months of 2012 than they did in the previous six months.
So what types of jobs are in demand for professionals with Linux skills? 67 percent of respondants said they are hiring Linux developers, 55 percent are hiring Linux system administrators while 20 percent are looking to hire IT managers. In addition, 75 percent of survey respondents are looking for mid-level Linux professionals with three to five years of experience.
“Learning linux has definitely been worth my time. Even though I’m still at a pretty beginner level working with it, knowing Linux is helping me take on more advanced roles in my career,” said Ryan Stickney, a systems administrator in Seattle, WA.
