Career Round Up: Doctors in Demand, GM Freezes Pensions, More

  • Doctors in Demand. As doctors continue to focus on specialized medicine, which offers considerably higher pay, the need for family practice doctors is increasing. With the current rate of specialization, it's predicted that the shortage of doctors will double over the next 15 years, according to a recent Washington Post article
  • GM Freezes Pension Plans. Salaried workers at GM are facing a change in their pension plan. Approximately 19,000 employees hired before 2001 will be moved from a guaranteed benefit plan to a 401(k) type retirement plan. This pension plan change comes in conjunction with a bonus plan according to CBS News.
  • Obama Encourages Insourcing. Speaking from the factory floor of Master Lock, in Milwaukee, WI, President Obama encourages manufacturing companies to bring jobs back to the United States. According to the LA Times, Obama is using Master Lock's recent move to bring 100 jobs back to the U.S. from overseas as an example for other companies.

  • Is Unemployment Insurance Good for the Job Market? University of Chicago Economic Professor, Casey B. Mulligan, analyses whether unemployement insurance increases hiring in a recent New York Times blog post. Mulligan points to studies which demonstrate that unemployment insurance does directly benefit the recipient, but questions whether it impacts the labor pool as a whole and if unemployment insurance increases hiring.
