Math has long been a field dominated by men. Now, researchers are asking why. Is it a difference in the way men and women’s brains are wired or is it something else? This OnlineColleges.com, infographic sheds some light on women in mathematics.
A 2013 study in the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization shows that girls didn’t perform as well as boys in contests that had only one round. However, when there were multiple rounds, girls were able to perform just as well and in many cases even better. The study showed that speed was also a factor. When the tests were not timed, the girls did just as well as the boys, even in the first round.
Stereotypes may also lead to discrepancies between men and women. In 1992, Mattel took a lot of flack for releasing a talking Barbie doll that uttered the phrase, “Math class is tough!” It seems that parents weren’t too excited about the idea of reaffirming social stereotypes.
