The fast food giant McDonald’s plans on hiring some 250,000 workers this summer. That probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise given the fact that McDonald’s is one of the world’s biggest employers. But, the way in which they’re going about recruiting and hiring these workers is something new and very 2017. They’re going to use Snapchat, the social media app, to attract young workers.

“As we see the younger generations seeking out their first jobs, we want to make them aware of the great opportunities available at McDonald’s,” Jez Langhorn, a human resources executive with McDonald’s, told WHNT News.

Snapchat As a Recruitment Tool?

If McDonald’s is looking to attract younger workers, Snapchat just might be the right place to find them. According to The Washington Post, 71 percent of the app’s 300 million monthly users are under the age of 34. And, nearly half of Snapchat’s users, 45 percent, are between the ages of 18 and 24.

In order to recruit these young workers, McDonald’s rolled out a series of 10-second videos on Snapchat earlier this month that describe the benefits of working for the company. After viewing them, interested parties are directed to the company’s website where they can apply for a job.

Summer Employment and Young Workers

McDonald’s has long employed young workers for summer positions. Last year, the company said that they expected to hire 130,000 people, ages 16 to 24, for summer jobs. So, this year’s target of 250,000 marks an increase.

There are plenty of young people looking for work. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics data, last year the number of employed persons ages 16 to 24 increased from 1.9 million in April to 20.5 million in July. The largest supporter of their employment was the leisure and hospitality industry, which includes food services. Twenty-five percent of young workers were employed in that sector during the summer of 2016.

The benefits of summer employment extend beyond a simple paycheck. The experience helps young people develop time-management skills and broaden their networks. It also helps to build confidence and social skills.

Perhaps Snapchat will help some young people find their way to a summer work opportunity this year.
