Why Mental Health Matters at Work [infographic]

Topics:

This infographic by the Samsung Economic Research Institute illustrates why mental health matters at work. Programs that help employees manage and treat stress and mental illness not only boost productivity, but also improve companies’ public image.

An ideal employee mental health program treats all phases, from prevention and early response to treatment and follow-up. The infographic outlines several examples of successful mental health management systems. Prudential, for example, helped ease workers’ stress with its aging parent support program, which ran between 1990 and 1996. Quad/Graphics gives its employees an annual stress test to tackle emerging issues early. Coffee by Design integrates employees’ mental health into its customer service training to customize treatment according to job function. And Abbott slowly reintegrates workers into the office setting after treatment with hourly work and interviews before returning them to full-time work.

It’s no wonder that SERI is paying so much attention to mental health: In Korea, treatment for mental illness has gone up every year since 2004, and suicide rates have been on a steep upward slope since 2006. Those are trends no economy wants to see continue.
