Each year, PayScale surveys thousands of human resource, compensation and business leaders to learn about how they’re using compensation to drive their business initiatives forward. Below is a summary of those results for 2013.

Methodology

The data represented here was compiled from PayScale’s Survey of Compensation Best Practices, conducted from November – December of 2012.

Survey results were analyzed several ways to compare results by company size and industry.

Overall Sample Size
In total, 4,429 business and HR leaders completed our 2013 Compensation Best Practices Survey. Of the respondents surveyed, 45% were from small companies (less than 100 employees), 34% from medium companies (100-1,000 employees), and 21% from large companies (1,000+ employees).

Respondent Job Functions:
50% of respondents were in HR Management. 23% of all respondents were Executive Level (C-level or VP). The next most popular function was HR Specialist, accounting for 19% of all respondents, followed by Administrative, accounting for approximately 8% of all responses.

Industry Sample Size:
The biggest industry contributors were: Healthcare and Social Assistance, making up 14% of the total sample; Manufacturing accounted for 12%; Professional, Scientific & Tech Services accounted for 10%; Information, Media & Telecommunications and Finance & Insurance both accounted for approximately 7% of respondents.
