Great Career Advice From Famous Moms

Topics:

Mother’s Day provides a great opportunity to honor the women who’ve paved the way for future generations. It’s also an opportune time to attempt to glean some wisdom from their life experiences.

Being a mom isn’t easy. Neither is having a successful career. If you’re one of the millions of women who are trying to do both simultaneously, you might benefit from a little advice. Here are some words of wisdom to help inspire you this Mother’s Day:

  1.  “I think every working mom probably feels the same thing: You go through big chunks of time where you’re just thinking, ‘This is impossible. Oh, this is impossible.’ And then you just keep going and keep going, and you sort of do the impossible.” – Tina Fey
  2. “Get rid of the guilt…When you’re at one place, don’t feel bad that you’re not at work; when you’re at work, don’t feel bad that you’re not at home.” – Katie Couric
  3. “When I started law school, my daughter, Jane, was 14 months and I attribute my success in law school largely to Jane. I went to class about 8:30 am and I came home at 4:00 pm, that was children’s hour. It was a total break in my day and children’s hour continued until Jane went to sleep. Then I was happy to go back to the books, so I felt each part of my life gave me respite from the other.” – Ruth Bader Ginsburg
  4. “I tell my daughters to have their voice in this world, and it became clear I needed to role-model that.” – Melinda Gates
  5. “Too many young women are harder on themselves than circumstances warrant. They are too often selling themselves short. They too often take criticism personally instead of seriously. You should take criticism seriously because you might learn something, but you can’t let it crush you. You have to be resilient to keep moving forward despite whatever the personal setbacks and even insults that come your way might be. That takes a sense of humor about yourself and others, believe me this hard-won advice. But it is a process. You need other women, you need your friends to support you, and you need male friends as well as female ones. You need good role models all of that is true. But at the end of the day, you really have to be good if you have high aspirations. You need to be well-educated, prepared, and willing to take your chances when they come your way. Cut yourself a little bit of slack.” – Hillary Clinton
  6. “Getting past those labels, for me, pretty much really easy because I define myself.” – Serena Williams
  7. “Power’s not given to you. You have to take it.” – Beyonce
  8. “There is an unspoken pact that women are supposed to follow. I am supposed to act like I constantly feel guilty about being away from my kids. (I don’t. I love my job.) Mother’s who stay at home are supposed to pretend they are bored and wish they were doing more corporate things. (They don’t. They love their job.)” – Amy Poehler
  9. “The truth of the matter was that whether I’m the first lady and he’s the president, our first job is make sure that our kids are on point. That is the most important legacy we will ever leave.” – Michelle Obama
  10. “[My mother] told me that fear was not an option. I was always told that women are stronger, so I believed it.” – Diane Von Furstenberg
