Almost 95 percent of work-from-home jobs have location requirements, according to FlexJobs, a job search site specializing in remote, part-time and contract jobs.

If that comes as a surprise, consider: even if you can perform all of your assigned duties from the comfort of your own home, there’s more to having a job than just working. Tax considerations or professional licensing requirements might restrict where workers can live. Some companies also prefer to have workers live in-state for training purposes, or so that they can attend occasional in-person meetings.

For these reasons, you’re better off living in certain states as a would-be telecommuter. Which states? FlexJobs crunched the numbers and identified the 15 states with the most work-from-home jobs listed in their database last year.

Here are the top 10, and a few employers that typically hire telecommuters:

1. California

Employers: Red Hat, ULTA

2. Texas

Employers: Wells Fargo, Williams-Sonoma

3. Virginia

Employers: American Red Cross, CVS Health

4. New York

Employers: American Express, Teach For America

5. Florida

Employers: Humana, UnitedHealth Group

6. Illinois

Employers: Molina Healthcare, Pearson

7. Pennsylvania

Employers: PNC, SAP

8. Georgia

Employers: Fiserv, Robert Half International

9. North Carolina

Employers: Amgen, Lowe’s

10. Arizona

Employers: Equifax, Grand Canyon University – GCU

Don’t see your state on the list? Don’t give up on your work-from-home dreams. While the majority of companies have location requirements for telecommuting roles, not every employer has these restrictions.

Plus, an increasing number of companies are willing to consider allowing their workers to telecommute on an occasional basis. If you like your job, but want more flexibility, you might even consider asking your boss if you can work from home a day or two a week. You might be surprised at their willingness to work with your schedule.
