You Have No Future at a Company With No Future

What would make you want to stay at your organization? What would make you want to leave?

At PayScale, we think long and hard about these kind of questions, and we want to know the answers.

That’s why, between 2015 and 2016, PayScale surveyed 501,796 employees, asking them to provide their salary info, and asking them whether they planned on actively seeking employment outside of their current company in the next six months. Then we asked them to respond to a number of statements about their employer on a scale from “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree.”

One of those statements was:

  • I am confident my employer has a bright future.

And the Band Played On

What we found was, when it comes to reasons employees look for a new job at a new organization, company outlook is far and away the chief driver of intent to leave.

Our research showed that an employee who strongly agreed that their company had a bright future was half as likely to plan on leaving in the next six months than a neutral employee. A worker who strongly disagreed with that statement, on the other hand, was 2.6 times more likely to leave as the neutral employee.

What does that mean in layman’s terms? It means that if an employee believes their organization is going under, they’re not planning on going down with the ship.

What else did we learn? All kinds of good stuff. And it’s all in our report, The Formula for a Winning Company Culture.
