When you think of work-from-home jobs, you might think of low-paying roles in customer service or support. But not all remote jobs are low-paying, and customer service is far from the only game in town when it comes to working from home. Professionals in industries ranging from tech to healthcare to education can find jobs that let them telecommute on a part-time or full-time basis.
In fact, the typical telecommuter makes $58,000 a year, according to data from Global Workplace Analytics. Some remote workers make more than that — a lot more. If you’re highly skilled and work in a hot industry, you might be able to earn as much as six figures a year and never have to put up with the stress of a commute (or finding pants with a non-elastic waistband).
Recently, FlexJobs ran a list of high-paying jobs for telecommuters. Many typically offer annual salaries that exceed $100,000:
1. Senior iOS Developer
iOS developers create, maintain and debug mobile applications. They must be fluent in programming languages such as Objective-C and Swift, and able to work well with others, both internally and externally. (Especially if their role involves supporting customer service staff who provide tech support to customers.) Experienced developers can earn as much as $117,000 annually, according to PayScale data.
2. Senior Systems Engineer
Senior Systems Engineers are more involved in design than lower level systems administrators. They might specialize in storage, virtualization or large-scale platforms. Median annual pay is $101,020, per our data.
3. Qualitative User Experience Researcher
With 10-plus years of experience, user experience researchers earn average annual salaries of $136,000. This role involves researching user experience features in software applications to increase satisfaction and brand loyalty.
4. Project Manager
Project managers work in a variety of fields, from IT to construction — but you’re obviously more likely to score a telecommuting job if your specific gig translates well to a home office environment. The median annual salary for a general project manager is $72,069, and experienced workers earn average annual pay of $85,000.
5. Senior Business Analyst
In this role, workers identify business risks and opportunities by analyzing data collected by interviews, surveys, research and other methods. Good communication skills are essential in this role, as senior business analysts must communicate with stakeholders across the organization, as well as enforcing deadlines and schedules. Experienced senior business analysts make an average annual salary of $95,000, according to PayScale data.
