When you think of work-from-home jobs, a few occupations spring to mind: customer service representative, blogger, software developer … basically, anything that depends more on the use of a computer than face-to-face interaction. But as technology gets better, opportunities to telecommute expand past these commonly held roles. Don’t assume that just because your job is traditionally done on-site that you’re destined to commute for the rest of your career.
FlexJobs recently ran a list of unusual work-from-home jobs that are now hiring in their subscription job search database. Some might be rarer than others — you won’t be lucky enough to find an opening for “NBA Contributor” every day of the week — but the list as a whole is a reminder that many jobs are adaptable to telecommuting.
Here are just a few from their list:
1. SAT Instructor
The listing is for a part-time telecommuting role, but thanks to Skype and related technologies, it’s easier than ever for tutors and instructors to do their jobs from home. This is an unusual work-from-home job that’s totally within reach. Tutors earn a median hourly wage of $17.28, according to PayScale data.
2. Therapist – Mental Health Counselor
Online therapy started getting press a few years ago, when therapy sites began popping up, offering clients the chance to connect with licensed therapists via video chat, text messaging, and more. If you’re a therapist who’s tired of the commute, you can help patients from the comfort of your own home office. The median salary for clinical psychologists is $73,798, according to PayScale.
3. Climate Campaigner
This option-to-telecommute job is full-time and involves some travel, per the job listing. Project management skills are required. Not every green non-profit job will allow the same flexibility, of course, but if you’re in the industry and your job relies on phone/video/internet, you might be able to find a work-from-home job that saves the planet.
4. Personal Nurse Navigator
Registered nurses earn a median hourly wage of $28.47, according to our data. If you have four or more years of experience in an acute care setting, and are interested in doing something a little different, this listing offers a remote role with some travel. Nurse navigators in general work as patient advocates, helping them understand the healthcare process.
5. Game Designer
This listing is specifically for experienced game designers who live in the U.K. or Europe, but if you’re in the field, you can find telecommuting roles in the U.S., as well. Game designers earn a median annual salary of $58,438, per PayScale’s data.
