Hate your job? You’re not alone. In 2015, Gallup reported that just 32 percent of U.S. workers were engaged in their work. That means more than two-thirds of us might want to look around for better opportunities.
While there are lots of reasons you might not like going to work every day, here are some of the most common causes of job dissatisfaction. If any of them resonate, perhaps consider searching for a new position that will have you excited to arrive at the office. At the start of a new year, it’s the perfect time to make a change.
Major Managerial Issues
We’ve all had a bad manager at some point. It can’t help but affect your mood at work if you feel like there’s a problem with communication or compatibility. Effective managers provide mentorship, support, and help you achieve your goals with an appropriate level of guidance. Without that, the workplace can be unpleasant, stifling, or downright depressing.
It’s Time for a Change
Sometimes work can get dull or frustrating if you’ve simply been in a position for a long time. The days of working in the same position or company for decades until retirement are long gone.
While the myth of the job-hopping millennial is just that, it’s still normal for people to try out several different jobs over the course of a career. Whether you want a new challenge, an entirely new industry, or simply a change of environment, it can all add up to feelings of resentment toward your current job.
You’re Underpaid
Feeling underpaid can make a person dissatisfied with their job, even if the work itself is enjoyable. The Payscale Salary Survey can tell you whether or not you’re being paid fairly, based on expertise and experience. If you’re otherwise happy with the position, consider negotiating for a raise. In the event that this doesn’t get the results you were hoping, consider using the market data as part of your future job search.
