Tomorrow’s job report from the Labor Department is expected to reflect approximately 200,000 jobs added in April, and an unemployment rate holding steady at 5 percent. However, if you take a closer look at the data, a less rosy picture of the economy emerges. A disproportionate number of those jobs being added are in fact low-wage jobs. Besides the obvious fact that low-wage jobs don’t afford a very cushy life for workers, very few offer health benefits, sick pay/leave, PTO, or retirement plans.

In fact, “only a third of low-wage jobs offer health insurance,” and “only a quarter offer workers any kind of retirement plan,” reports NBC News. This is troublesome because making less money means that it’s harder for these individuals to make ends meet, therefore there are little to no “leftover” funds to devote to savings (a.k.a. retirement).

The Gender Pay Gap in Low-Wage Jobs
Another pill that’s hard to swallow is the gender pay gap that exists in low-wage jobs. The National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) reports that women make up about two-thirds of the 23 million+ workers in the low-wage workforce, and it’s estimated that they are “paid 15 percent less than their male counterparts.” In a separate article, NWLC notes that, “Low-wage work often leaves women working full time below or near the poverty line and unable to balance work and caregiving responsibilities,” which is definitely not good for working women in low-wage jobs, or their families.

I think that every state should develop fruit and vegetable farms for its citizens. In just a matter of a few years, people will no longer have access to jobs outside their home. They will be searching for a way to feed their families. This is the true state of America.
Key word is in the title …EARN..Just about every job out there is paid on Knowledge, Experience and Skill.
If you possess a combination of those and your employer needs a combination of them, you are paid for your worth to that employer.
As my father once told me. “The world needs ditch diggers too..”
I think that the government should fund creative thinking programs. Yes, jobs are harder to find however, it is up to us to find creative ways to develop jobs and figuer out what services people really need. I Belive also that we should focuse on training people who lack employability skills, and training them how to network and to how create jobs. Employing this stratigy would be a solution to the unemployment crisis. The main areas that people are going… Read more »
