NBA Asks Men to ‘Lean In Together’

Topics: Current Events

The NBA, alongside the WNBA and LeanIn.org, recently released a new PSA. Featured big names, such as LeBron James and Dwayne Wade, speak about how they support the women in their lives. “When men lean in, everyone wins,” the announcement declares.

This PSA comes alongside the launch of a new campaign from Sheryl Sandberg’s nonprofit organization, in which men are encouraged to join the fight for women’s equality. “Lean in Together” asks men to support women in the workplace and at home, and explains that, “when men lean in for equality they win – and so does everyone else.”

Do You Know What You're Worth?

The homepage for the new campaign elaborates, “Children with involved fathers are happier, healthier, and more successful. Couples that share responsibilities have stronger marriages. Diverse teams and companies produce better results.” The statement concludes with a reminder that women should celebrate men’s fight for equality, “Men, show the world you’re in for equality. Women, celebrate men leaning in.”

The Lean In Together site also features tips for men on how to lean in, resources, and a page that displays tweets and instagram posts tagged with #leanintogether. Shots of men taking out the trash, reading to their children, or otherwise supporting the women in their lives through being involved fathers and supportive partners, reinforces the message. Men are a crucial part of this movement, and their involvement in the struggle for gender equality makes a big difference.

Women’s reflections on how the men in their lives support their careers make up a second PSA. High-profile, highly successful women, such as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Hillary Clinton, and Lena Dunham, offer their stories of support from the men in their lives.

The new campaign targets many of the themes found in Sandberg’s 2013 book Lean In. Sandberg asks men to challenge their unconscious biases about gender, and pushes for fair evaluations of women’s performances, for example. While the ideas are familiar, highlighting the role men play in the problem, and the solution, is somewhat new. Bringing in some big names to help get the message across to the general public is a solid step toward driving these ideas home.
