Over the past few years, South by Southwest has grown from a music festival into a multi-disciplinary cultural event. Whatever you’re interested in — film, education, the environment, or emerging technologies — you can bet there’s an upcoming panel devoted to innovations that will change that field. This year, PayScale has two panels up for consideration, both focusing on how education and training can help you get the job you want and money you deserve.

1. Economic Mobility Through Education
College is expensive, but potentially not as expensive as not going to college. PayScale’s lead economist Katie Bardaro and Jim Wolfston of CollegeNet look at how we can keep help low-income students have access to the economic promise of higher education. Questions answered will include:
1. How can we motivate schools to admit more low-income students?
2. How can we ensure that low-income students graduate from college?
3. How can we get low-income students into good careers post-graduation?
2. What Employers Want Most and Get Least from Grads
Forty-three percent of people tell PayScale that they’re underemployed — the vast majority because they don’t make as much money as they feel they should. Panelists Barnaby Dorfman of PayScale, Kristen Hamilton of Koru, Zachary First of The Drucker Institute, and Tony Wagner of Harvard University Innovation Lab examine the perception and reality of underemployment, identify models that produce star employees, and talk about how to close the skills gap.
