Google Still Searching for Diversity

Topics:

After Google recently released their workforce statistics, it was a pretty clear that white males comprise a majority of the company. The news is not surprising, as it reflects a problem that plagues most of Silicon Valley.

According to an article in The New York Times, out of Google’s 46,170 worldwide employees, only 17 percent of their technical employees are women. This pales in comparison to the 47 percent of women who represent the total American work force and is below the 20 percent of female software developers that represent the tech industry, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Do You Know What You're Worth?

Things didn’t look any better when comparing the number of minority workers. Of all the Google employees in the United States, 61 percent are white, 3 percent are Hispanic, and 2 percent are black. Only Asians rose above the double-digit mark, making up roughly one-third of the company.

This skewed number is far from representative of the nation’s actual demographic. The decision to disclose such information arose from increasing debates over the lack of diversity within the industry. Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson has been pressuring tech companies like Facebook and Hewlett-Packard, to divulge their diversity information — something they have yet to do.

Even though the show of good faith on Google’s part is a step toward opening up dialogue, the industry as a whole has quite a way to go if it wants to enter into the 21st century.

Those who keep comparing this matter to sporting leagues that consist of recruiting people with outstanding phycical talent such as the NFL or NBA are not providing a valid point on why FB and Google workforce ethnicity ratio is imbalanced.

Let me get this straight, if Google, HP or Facebook hires a majority of white males, why is it Jesse Jacksons concern? I have not heard him say anything about the racial ratio in businesses such as the NBA and NFL. I am a white male and I have been discriminated by my employer after I worked there for 31 years with EE ratings on my PE reviews. I was laid off and could not find another position within the… Read more »

This article only further points outs that white males are still the norm in corporate America and nothing is going to change until you print the real story of why it wont change, greed and bigotry. When you write that story, I will take your company more seriously.

Making stupid articles like this reflects stupidity of the author itself. I hope I am not being very direct and sound like ignoring fake issues. Or may be Google is only bigoted to blacks and Hispanics and not Asian? Or better may be only white people know how make company great, right? Is this your point?

Liberal bull****! So let me cripple my company by hiring employees not best suited for the job just so I can make my company more “diverse”…Really?! So that way the people who use Google can suffer because we hired imcompetent people.  It’s really not that hard of a concept. Corruption aside, a business hires who is best for the job, no matter the skin color.  Let’s tell the NFL they need some more Asians please!!!! LOL! This article is a… Read more »
