The 5 Best Employers in the US for 2014

Want to be happy at work and well-compensated for your labor? The healthcare sector might be the place to look. Together with PayScale, Business Insider recently released their top 50 list of the best employers in the country, and healthcare companies — like No. 1 for the second year in a row Celgene Corporation — cropped up frequently.

Companies were ranked according to scores calculated from the following factors: high job satisfaction, low job stress, high job meaning, high work-schedule flexibility, experienced median pay, and salary delta. Business Insider weighted pay twice in their calculations. (View their methodology.)

The full list of 50 companies is here; these are the top five:

1. Celgene Corporation

Headquarters: Summit, NJ

Median pay: $115,000 after five years.

Why is this company a great employer? Their motto is “Do well by doing good,” plus they have a high rate of work-schedule flexibility (97 percent).

2. Biogen Idec

Headquarters: Cambridge, Mass.

Median pay: $96,100 after five years.

Why is this company a great employer? A leader in drug treatments for MS, Biogen Idec offers high rates of job meaning (87 percent) and work-schedule flexibility (87 percent).

3. Celanese Corporation

Headquarters: Irving, Texas

Median pay: $103,000 after five years.

Why is this company a great employer? Chemicals company Celanese Corporation offers high work-schedule flexibility (86 percent) and job satisfaction (74 percent).

4. Colgate-Palmolive Company

Headquarters: New York

Median pay: $101,000 after five years.

Why is this company a great employer? Workers at this consumer-products company report high job satisfaction (86 percent) and work-schedule flexibility (79 percent).

5. Anadarko Petroleum Corp.

Headquarters: The Woodlands, Texas

Median pay: $88,800 after five years.

Why is this company a great employer? Employees of this gas and petroleum company report high levels of job satisfaction (83 percent) and work-schedule flexibility (82 percent).
