How to Keep Your Eyes Healthy at Work [infographic]

Topics:

If you work at a computer, you probably spend seven hours a day staring at a computer screen. At home, between TV and staring at your smartphone or tablet, you tack on as much as five hours more. All of this adds up to some potentially very unhappy eyeballs, which can impact your productivity and happiness at work.

This infographic contains a few scary facts that will feel very familiar to computer users:

Do You Know What You're Worth?

  • Computer Vision Syndrome is a constellation of symptoms including eye irritation, neck pain, dry eyes, and headaches. At its worst, it can cause blurred vision and even permanent short-sightedness or scarring of the cornea.
  • Good ergonomics includes keeping your eyes 20 to 30 inches away from the screen. We’ll pause as you slowly back away from your monitor.
  • 48 percent of people report that their productivity plummets if they don’t take a lunch break, but only 30 percent actually take one (in the UK, at least). In the US, a 2010 Businesswire survey found that 21 percent of workers eat lunch at their desks every day.

If you want to take better care of your eyes, a good way to get started is by implementing the 20-20-20 rule — “every 20 minutes, take your eyes off your screen, and look at something 20 feet away, for 20 seconds.”

Even better: get up every once in a while and take a real break. Bonus points if it includes lunch and doesn’t include work.
