Do You Know What You're Worth?

The workplace has evolved over the past couple of years. Allison O’Kelly, founder of Mom Corps, provides three observations about how the shifts in the workplace will affect candidates in her article for Huffington Post:

1. Workplace flexibility will gain more footing as a social issue, both in terms of employee demand and public policy.

2. Staffing companies will become less transactional and more like long-term “agents” for job seekers.

3. Changes brought on by the Affordable Care Act will lead companies to staff in more non-traditional ways.

(Read her full article, here.)

These changes are encouraging employers to hire more strategically and less conventionally in order to maintain the talent they already have, while also attracting quality loyal candidates who are looking to stick with the company long-term. Likewise, job seekers should be conscious of the fact that companies may be looking to hire part-time, flexible, temp-to-hire employees to fill in the gaps resulting from the aforementioned changes. Therefore, don’t dismiss an opportunity simply because it’s not full-time – which, we know, is easier said than done – because that temp position could turn into a lifelong career, if you play your cards right.

3 Goal-setting Apps

You should have an idea of how the job market has shifted and what to expect next year, so now it’s to start setting some goals. In today’s digital, on-the-go age, smartphones are king – so, it’s no surprise that the best way to do anything nowadays is to get an app to help you out. Here are three goal-setting apps to help you turn those career dreams into a reality.

Way of Life – With a 4.5 star rating on iTunes, this app is as effective as it is easy to use. Way of Life is a simple, habit-building app where you input a list of habits that you want to track, and then you identify whether each is good or bad for you. Every day the app will ask you to track your habits with a simple “yes” or “no” response, and those responses are compiled in a chart to show you the progress you are or are not making. For instance, if you want to start meditating, then you add that habit to your list and, each day, you indicate whether you accomplished that task or not. Way of Life is a great way to become aware of and stop unhealthy habits while also promoting healthy ones.

Everest – This app allows users to track an unlimited amount of goals in a unique and beautiful way. With its incredible interface and vast capabilities – such as capturing goals through pictures – the thing that really separates this app from the other apps is its social component. Everest allows users to turn to their “Dream Team,” or a group of supporters, if a user gets stuck, needs motivation, or simply wants some input. You aren’t just goal-setting with Everest, you’re turning dreams into reality every step of the way.

Smart Goals – What’s so great about this app is that it separates out dreams, goals, and habits. What’s the difference between the three? Dreams can be thought of as the broadest and most lenient of the three – for instance, “I want to climb Mount Everest.” Next are goals, which are attainable short- or long-term aspirations, like, “I want to lose 20 pounds.” Lastly, there are habits, or the small actions we want to carry out daily, such as, “Exercise 30 minutes each day.” By breaking down your dreams, goals, and habits into bite-size pieces, people feel more confident to tackle their aspirations, with a higher rate of success.

Hopefully the information provided above will help you feel more prepared and inspired to accomplish bigger and better things in your career as we close out 2013 and head into the new year.
