Many of today’s most highly sought-after jobs did not exist a decade ago … or even a couple years ago. We can thank advancements in technology for new job titles such as social media manager, app developer, and user experience designer. Wagepoint, an online payroll solutions company, produced the infographic below that highlights the new jobs on the horizon, and tells us which skills we’ll need to fill these futuristic positions.

The advancements in technology may be developing at a faster rate than educational institutes can support. Nowadays, half of what college students learn in the first year of study will be outdated by their third year, according to the infographic, and 65 percent of kindergarteners will hold jobs in the future that do not exist now. Educational institutions are now being challenged with updating their curriculum and courses to successfully prepare students for the jobs of the future.

So, what does this mean for the careers of Gen Yers and Gen Xers? Many of these future jobs will require creative thinking, problem solving, innovation, digital literacy, and entrepreneurism. It’s estimated that robots will take over 45 percent of all jobs in the next few decades, which means there will definitely be a greater need for more startups that cater to the new jobs and technologies of the future. A safe bet for any professional is a career in technology, programming and coding especially, because these types of careers are in high demand now and will be in the future.
