The Career Monogamy Dilemma [infographic]

Topics:

Careers are much like marriages: they both consume your every waking moment, they’re both love/hate relationships, and, statistically speaking, they usually end in some sort of separation. We’ll take a look at why professionals nowadays have wandering eyes when it comes to their careers.

The economy has seen better days, and because of this reason, people are simply looking for and accepting jobs that will pay the bills and get them through this rough patch. Therefore, career monogamy (or career loyalty) is dwindling and being replaced with filler jobs. Most professionals are not looking to “settle down” with their new employers; they’re out there testing the waters, because something is better than nothing right now. It’s a scary thing when the employment arena begins to parallel the dating scene — one regretful career one-night stand after the other. Yikes!

Do You Know What You're Worth?

The acceptance of social media has also played a huge factor in the way that professionals are seeking out jobs. As the Jobvite infographic points out, “22 million Americans used social networks to find their most recent job,” with 43 percent using the popular professional networking site, LinkedIn.

With the job market being so saturated with highly accredited candidates, employers are looking for “that certain something” in a qualified individual that makes him stand out in the crowd. What is that something? It’s called loyalty, or a genuine desire to help the company reach its full potential, rather than an interest in just earning a paycheck.

Employers don’t want to waste time on someone who is working simply to receive a paycheck. They are looking for individuals that are in it for the long haul and have a genuine interest in why their companies do what they do. Again, think of this dynamic as you would dating — employers are looking for “marriage material,” not a gold-digger. So, get serious about your job search efforts. You don’t want to be trapped in a dead-end relationship (job) because you chose to settle for a measly paycheck.

Take a look at the infographic below to see how the job relationship dynamic has changed, that you know what you’re getting into from day one.
