3 Ways Your Big, Fat Mouth Can Cost You Your Job

Topics:

When it comes to the world of work, what you say can be as important as what you do. No matter how casual your work environment, making the wrong comments (or the wrong comments to the wrong people) can get you fired in a hurry.

The following things will get you a cardboard box and a security guard escort:

Do You Know What You're Worth?

1. Making prejudiced statements.

What’s more embarrassing than losing your job? Losing your job on TV. That’s what “Big Brother” housemate Aaryn Gries will find out, as soon as she returns from network-mandated media lockdown. Her homophobic and racist comments inspired her modeling agency to drop her as a client.

2. Saying the right thing to the wrong person.

Most of us have access to some sort of privileged information at work, whether it’s medical data or another employee’s social security number or the quote your company gave to that last client. Revealing any of these things to the wrong person will get you canned.

3. Complaining too much.

Come on, isn’t it our God-given right to whine a little? Maybe, but better do it on your own time. Complaining about the boss, your coworkers, or your job can come back to haunt you.

“Not only does it reveal juvenile school-yard immaturity, it’s language that is liable and fire-able,” says Darlene Price, author of “Well Said! Presentations and Conversations That Get Results,” in an interview with Forbes.

Even if griping doesn’t get you the old heave-ho immediately, it can sideline your chances of promotion … and move you to the head of the line at layoff time.

Gossiping is another no-no. It shows lack of professionalism and makes others feel you will also gossip about them and therefore will not confide in you.
