This week’s Twitter roundup recaps three trending topics that have caused quit a buzz: #TwitterSilence, #MarilynMonroe, and #SocialMedia. This trending topic takes a more serious tone, because it involves Twitter users taking action to crack down on abuse on the micro-blogging site after repeated rape and bomb threats were made to a handful of women in the United Kingdom. The threats on Twitter began after Caroline Criado-Perez, a diehard feminist campaigner, fought for the Bank of England to put a woman on the back of an English banknote … and won! However, Criado-Perez could not have anticipated what happened next.
Criado-Perez, along with a few of her feminist supporters, were harassed and bombarded with rape, death, and bomb threats on Twitter. Afterward, many questioned how long it took the company to react to such egregious cyber tormenting. Hence, #TwitterSilence was created to draw attention to the serious situation and “quiet” the bullying on Twitter.
Afterward, Criado-Perez stated, “But it is important to remember there are so many more of us [supporters] than them [trolls]. It can feel they are unbeatable, there are too many of them … don’t feed the trolls, just ignore them, there’s nothing you can do about that … bollocks to that. I don’t want to live in that world.”
Fighting for what you believe is right will, inevitably, disrupt someone else’s agenda and cause a bit of friction. The lessons to be learned as professionals are: 1. browbeating others is never acceptable in or out of the workplace, and 2. despite the backlash, going after what you truly believe in is worth it. Criado-Perez discovered this when the Bank of England awarded Jane Austen a spot on the back of the new ?10 note. Victory! PayScale constantly discusses the benefits of using social media to enhance and expand a person’s career. However, we also stress the flip side of the coin and explain how social media can be detrimental if the user isn’t careful about the type of content being posted and shared online. As this article explains, “74 percent [of people] aged 18-34 delete social media posts to avoid negative career impacts.” If you’re unsure about whether your social profiles are putting your career at risk, then chose one or all of the options listed below to protect your online brand:
1. Make every single one of your profiles private.
2. Delete every single post and picture that shows you partying too much.
3. Refrain from posting anything else that may be inappropriate, offensive, or make you look incompetent as a person and a professional.
Facebook now has Graph Search, which allows users to type in a keyword (e.g. your name) and find a laundry list of everything associated with that term. For instance, if your current or prospective employer decides to run a quick Facebook background check on you, then they will be able to see all of the juicy details of your not-so-proud past and present. So, play it safe and start with cleaning up your act online.
