Tech Workers Are So, So Young

Topics:

With kids toddling around around with iPads and an entire generation raised on social media, it’s commonly accepted that technology is mastered by the young. So it should come as no surprise to find out that the median age in the tech industry is young. Very young. And also, very male.

PayScale released a survey of 32 major companies in the tech sector that included some pretty interesting findings. Six of them had a media age of 35 or older. Eight had median ages of 30 or younger. Women made up less than one-third of the workforce. And in the semiconductor field, they made up even less.

The New York Times shared the report’s findings earlier this month.

“While the results may affirm a widely held hunch, they are nonetheless striking: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall median age of American workers is 42.3 years old,” the NYT reports. “The company with the oldest workers on the PayScale list, Hewlett – Packard, came in at 41 years.”

Do You Know What You're Worth?

The five companies with the oldest workers: I.B.M. Global Services (38 years old), Oracle (38), Nokia (36), Dell (37) and Sony (36).

Those with the youngest workers? Epic Games (26), Facebook (26), Zynga (28), Google (29) and AOL (30). That’s the same median age range of shoe stores and restaurants, says the NYT, quoting figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
