Flexibility in the workplace has become increasingly important to employees who want to manage a work-life balance, place large importance on travel, or simply need to organize their time between work, family and a side business. The infographic below outlines how technology is changing the workplace environment and making office life more flexible for employees.
Having a flexible work environment is so important to the modern-day worker that a third of US employees say work flexibility is actually the most important factor when considering a new job. The ability to telecommute to work can also reduce up to 60 percent of absenteeism, which in turn saves the company a lot of money.
A great deal of work flexibility has come at the hands of technology. One in 5 say they check their email before 7 a.m., and 60 percent will check their email after 6:30 p.m. For a great deal of employees, this means that while they are physically in the office for eight hours, they are actually in ‘work mode’ for almost 12 hours each day. And this practice has become expected by many companies. Eighty percent of bosses think it is acceptable to call employees in the evenings and 75 percent of companies provide their employees with tools like smartphones to ensure that they are able to work from anywhere at any time.
