5 Undesirable Jobs that Pay

Topics:

For this week's Casual Friday topic, we asked our users to tell us what jobs they would hate to have. We pulled the top five most common answers and, for fun, consulted our data to see how much these jobs pay. We learned it can pay big money to take a job nobody else wants.

Garbage Collector

It might seem like a dirty job but garbage collectors are laughing all the way to the trash dump. Workers can earn as much as $25 per hour, according to our data. Many city garbage collectors are unionized and enjoy excellent benefits and job perks. And, as one PayScale user pointed out, there's a certain amount of job security when working with trash.

Waste Management Engineer

Do You Know What You're Worth?

Sure, you might work with hazardous materials, but the paychecks in this messy gig are nothing to be afraid of. Waste management engineers can earn up to $100,000 a year or more. If you aren't squeamish, you could be earning a nice salary.

Septic Tank/Sewer Pipe Repairperson

If your stomach is strong enough to handle some of the smelliest things life has to offer, the payoff could be large. Many septic/sewer repairpeople earn over $50,000 per year. With a paycheck like that, you could come out smelling like a rose. And, this job comes with a reassuring, if smelly, bit of job security. Bonus: with this job, you will officially win every "who has the crappiest job" debate. Ever.

Coroner

Do you see dead people? Or, more importantly, can you handle working with the dead? If you have a strong constitution and an interest in science and biology, you might consider this career. Coroners can earn up to $103,000, according to our data. Plus, helping to solve murders might make you feel pretty good about yourself.

Pest Control

Are you the person who always takes care of the spiders in your house? Your bravery could pay off to the tune of $50,000. A pest control technician is everyone's favorite helper, especially in times of insect infestation. Personally, I'm terrified of crickets, so I'm in awe of anyone who works with creepy crawlies. I applaud you, courageous pest control technicians! Thank you for what you do.
