Even people who love their jobs have days when they'd rather be home watching TV. And since most folks fall somewhat short of absolutely adoring what they do, it's hard to tell when it's time to quit … and when it's just a bad day.
In a recent post on Harvard Business Review's blog, Amy Gallo consulted two business experts to determine a few signs of when it's time to go.
1. You keep crying wolf.
If you keep telling yourself you're going to quit, but never quite get around to it, there's probably an underlying problem, says, Daniel Gulati, coauthor of Passion & Purpose: Stories from the Best and Brightest Young Business Leaders
2. You don't want your boss's job.
Think about where you want to go after the job you have now. If it's not the next rung on the ladder, then you need to think about a new direction.
3. You can't get better.
If you're consistently underperforming, says Babson College President Leonard Schlesinger, you might be "up against an impossible task." The issue might not even be with you — sometimes people fail at jobs because of office politics, a lack of resources, or under-appreciation from their managers and peers. But whatever the reason, if you can't succeed where you are, it might be time to make a jump.
