The Wonderful World of Difficult Clients [infographic]

Topics:

Working with clients can be a rewarding experience. It can also be a frustrating one. There are many types of clients, and as this infographic points out, not all of them are wonderful to work with.

Mr. I Needed This Done Yesterday, for example, doesn’t understand that it takes time for a project to go from idea to final phase. With this type of client, it’s best to be straightforward and set realistic expectations. There’s also Mr. Everything’s an Emergency. This is a special kind of client who thinks that everything in your life is scheduled around them. With this type of client, it’s imperative that you set timetables and always meet deadlines. That way, they can feel reassured that everything is on track.

Ms. Lurker is a favorite of everyone’s. She disappears for days or even weeks at a time without a peep. Then, all of a sudden, she bombards you with urgent requests that must be attended to immediately. Again, setting expectations is key. If you’re on track, you can do your best to keep her on track too. Ms. I Don’t Know What I Want, But I Know It Isn’t That is nearly impossible to work with. She won’t offer you guidance or helpful suggestions, but she will offer negative feedback any chance she’s given. Believe it or not, this is a rare case where it might be best to turn down the work. After all, the impact on the team could be too brutal to bear.
