Can hitting the gym actually help you make more money? Researcher Vasilios Kosteas of Cleveland State University discovered that yes, working out can yield an average of 6 percent higher pay for men and 10 percent higher pay for women. Time to readdress those New Year’s resolutions!
Although previous research has linked obesity to lower earnings, Kosteas’ study focuses solely on the productivity boosts we get from exercise. You don’t need to train like an Olympian to reap the benefits, however. “While even moderate exercise yields a positive earnings effect, frequent exercise generates an even larger impact,” writes Kosteas.
Why are fit workers more likely to be productive? Kosteas writes that their discipline and commitment in the gym also makes them “more likely to undertake investments in their human capital and work more diligently, leading to higher potential earnings.”
