‘Binders Full of Women’ Meme Might Just Land Its Creator a Job

Topics:

Tired of fighting your way through blind email addresses and faceless HR managers? Invent a meme, and employers might just come looking for you.

That’s what happened to Veronica De Souza, a 23-year-old social media manager from Brooklyn whose very recent layoff inspired her to listen very closely to the debates on Tuesday night. When presidential candidate Mitt Romney made his infamous “binders full of women” comment, she saw a meme in the making.

To recap, Romney discussed his quest to find female appointees for cabinet positions when he was governor of Massachusetts.

Do You Know What You're Worth?

“I went to a number of women’s groups and said, ‘Can you help us find folks,’ and they brought us whole binders full of women.”

“I thought, ‘Oh boy,'” De Souza told the Wall Street Journal.

Her Tumblr, Binders Full of Women, took off immediately, gaining 3000 followers in the first half an hour, and grabbing the attention of several employers who contacted her to talk about job opportunities.

Of course, the irony is, she might not need them. Although she’s considering offers, De Souza says that she’s still processing the layoff and working on marketing herself.

“This insane thing that happened overnight might actually save my life right now, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed,” she told the Journal. “I haven’t actually had time to put my resume together.”
