Google acquired Motorola in May, and one of the search company’s first executive decisions is to cut nearly 4,000 Motorola Mobility Holdings jobs — some 20 percent of the workforce — and shut down one-third of its facilities. Most of these cuts will come from the firm’s international offices.
“Motorola is committed to helping them through this difficult transition and will be providing generous severance packages, as well as outplacement services to help people find new jobs,” read an emailed statement from Motorola Mobility.
The news on Google’s Motorola layoffs was first reported in Bloomberg Businessweek, which cites a regulatory filing Google made on Aug. 13. The filing indicated that the layoffs were essential to bringing Motorola back in the black.
Rank-and-file employees aren’t the only ones at Motorola who are getting the boot. Google has already reportedly gotten rid of 40 percent of Motorola’s vice presidents. Do you think the layoffs will help Motorola return to prominence?
