The Student Employment Gap: Inside the Youth Job Market [infographic]

Topics:

We know that it won’t be long before millennials comprise the majority of the job market, and this infographic by Millennial Branding reveals the student employment gap and its implications on young grads. Youth workers have an unusual conundrum: although 91 percent of employers expect students to have at least one internship before they graduate, half haven’t hired a single intern in the past six months. What other challenges do working students face?

Students who expect to be hired on after completing an internship may want to ready themselves for disappointment. Millennial Branding found that 79 percent of employers reported hiring 30 percent or less of their interns. With these dismal statistics, it’s no wonder that half of all new grads are unemployed or underemployed.

The infographic isn’t all doom and gloom, however: it also offers valuable insight into the exact skills employers seek in new grads. Communication expertise, a positive attitude, teamwork skills, a goal-oriented nature, adaptability to change, and strategic thinking and analysis competencies are foremost. Check out the full infographic below for more revelations.
