Bike to Work Month culminates with one big party on the third Friday of the month: Bike to Work Day. Everyone is encouraged to participate on this one day and, here in Seattle, it's a party on wheels. The day's organizer, Cascade Bicycle Club, not only hosts its own station with snacks and drinks for riders, they've encouraged DIY (Do It Yourself) stations all over the city in the last few years. Now, the whole town is dotted with opportunities to load up on doughnuts, coffee, smoothies and more.
One PayScale employee, Bridget Quigg, has been hosting a DIY Bike to Work Day station for the last four years. She chose a spot by Lake Washington in a neighborhood called Madrona. "It's one of the prettiest spots on the lake. We have a view of Mt. Rainier so commuters sometimes stay a while, sip coffee and just stare out over the water," says Quigg.
Her location in the middle of the city, down by the lake, means that Quigg meets a lot of people on their way to working at the University of Washington or down south in Renton — many being employees at REI's corporate headquarters. How Seattle is that?
Emmett Doerr, development manager at PayScale, has been helping with the station the last few years. "I like helping out," Doerr says. "You get to talk biking, drink coffee and enjoy the scenery."
Next year, Quigg hopes to get more people involved and offer even better snacks. "People are getting used to stopping by every year so I want to make sure they enjoy their visit."
