The U.S. Postal Service has been hurting for years, and last week representatives announced its new consolidation strategy. The organization will consolidate or close 223 mail processing centers — a move that eliminates some 35,000 full-time and non-career positions.
“These changes are a necessary part of a larger comprehensive plan developed by the Postal Service to reduce operating costs by $20 billion by 2015 and return the organization to profitability,” read a statement on the USPS website.
USPS officials hope that Congress will approve legislation later this year that permits the organization to end mail delivery on Saturdays, close thousands of post offices and make other moves to weather its financial woes. Currently, all Postal Service operating expenses are funded with the sale of products, postage and services, which have all suffered since the advent of email and the 2008 economic crisis.
